Mobility & Transport Engineering at RWTH Aachen University

Composition of the profile areas of the RWTH Aachen University.

Traffic is the basis of any economy , because it is the most important factor in every supply chain . Any domestic market can't function without good transportation networks. Traffic improves the quality of life by transporting its participants from one place to another. In addition, the transport industry is an important industry in the EU with 10 million employees and a contribution of 5 % of gross domestic product .

However, the transport sector depends almost entirely on fossil fuels as the energy source . In this sector alone the greenhouse gas emissions have risen almost continuously in the past 20 years and are now about one-third higher than in the year 1990. Although the energy efficiency has increased by technical progress , it can not yet compensate entirely the increased traffic volume. If this development is not countersteered against, it could trigger a deterioration of the climate and local environment and further lead to disabling mobility through traffic overload.

At this point the determination of the profile area " Mobility & Transport Engineering " gets obvious . Professor Dirk Abel - spokesperson for the area - sees the following options to approach these challenge: " First of all, we need to develop new propulsion systems and more sustainable fuels in Aachen . Nevertheless, not only technical solutions, but also the development of new mobility concepts supported by domestic integrative technologies
enable a remarkable increase in the efficiency of traffic .
